Carb Cards™

Review by Tiffany Anthony
www.carbhealth.com
June 4, 2004

Carb Cards™ are a unique and fun way to keep track of the foods you eat. They're also great for teaching children how to monitor their carb intake, whether for diabetes management, or to encourage smart eating habits - hopefully for a lifetime. Adults can use them to learn how to control portion sizes, and understand the carb load of various foods.

Carb Cards™ were created by Judy Vanderwist, mother of two diabetic children (who are now grown up!) Judy created them in hopes that her children would better understand the effect of carbohydrate on their glucose levels, and get their blood sugar under control.

The cards became popular in the diabetic community, and now as carb restriction has grown increasingly mainstream, they also fit well into a low-carb diet or lifestyle regimen.

The cards have a hand-drawn picture of a food item, the number of carb grams in the food item, and a serving size. There is a booklet which describes various card games which can be played (children seem to learn best when it's fun!) There is a large card version available for use in classroom settings or for the vision-impaired.

When I received my package, I was expecting only a set of flashcards. I didn't expect anything fancy - certainly not glossy or vividly colored. You can imagine my surprise when I opened the package and saw this professional product! And...I didn't just receive the cards - there was also a placemat, journal, and even a pen for keeping track!

I have seen quite a few products since I began the CarbHealth web site. Most of them have been food or cookbooks. I love to eat, so those are great for reviewing - but I must say - this is my absolute favorite product! Not only is it an incredible value for the high-quality, but it also makes me smile! And of course it still has to do with eating, while educational. How can you lose?!?!
