I’m certainly not the only person who has trouble finding the recommended hour a day for exercise. And that’s without the time it takes to go to a suitable place, and the additional time it takes to change and shower. Not to mention the expense, the self-consciousness, and the pressure to justify the investment, whether time or money – and who needs more pressure?
Instead, I’ve found ways to make both aerobics and resistance training so pleasant that this former couch potato now loves to exercise.
For aerobics, all I need is some floor space, a source of music -- and a door! First thing in the morning, I shut everyone out, put on my favorite music, and dance up a storm (and a sweat, and heart rate, etc.). I do it before I shower, so all it adds is the exercise time itself – not even that if I combine it with chores. With complete privacy, it doesn’t matter that I am no dancer. I also don’t need special exercise clothes -- a loose T-shirt is easier to get out of than a sweaty leotard.
For resistance training, lifting smaller weights slowly can build muscle and strengthen bones just as well as faster reps with more weight. I use free weights, a chair for balance during leg exercises, and an interesting book, so I don’t get bored. Before buying any weights, I started with detergent bottles filled with increasing amounts of water. Later, I bought only what I needed until I was sure I’d keep it up. In time, I got expensive leg weights (for Mother’s Day!), but still don’t use a bookrack – holding the book is part of the challenge.
The exercise has been good for my body, and the music and reading has been good for my soul.
