I am at a very desperate stage of my life I'm female, almost 36 and at 300 lbs. (last time I got on a scale). I had back surgery 4 months ago and was told by the M.D. to lose some weight or I was risking another surgery. Even with that I can't get started. I'm tired of this life. I hate being FAT, my marriage of only 2 yrs. is suffering because of my low self-esteem. I've done Atkins in the past and has worked, but now that I'm at my highest weight ever I need help, I need friends that will help me get through this. HELP. Any advise will be helpful.

You've made just about the best start I can think of.....you know what you have to do and are working towards that goal. Everyone here will give you as much support and encouragement as you need. Today is Tuesday.......pick your date for next week to start and between now and then get yourself prepared....go through your cabinets and refrigerator and donate all the things you shouldn't have to the local food bank or church and get to the store WITH A SHOPPING LIST. Stick to that list and get the food items you'll need. If you have fresh vegetables in the house you're more likely to eat them. That first jump will be the hardest so simplify it.

I agree with DubhBas, my only other suggestion is to re-read the book - maybe twice - I've been doing Atkins for almost 2 years and I still refer back to it on an almost daily basis.

First off, grats on making the decision to change your life! We all have been through it to some extreme or another. My advice is as follows...

1.as DubhBas stated, get rid of EVERYTHING that is not approved for Atkins induction phase.

2. Go shopping and FILL your fridge and cabinets with as much stuff as you can fit. Being well stocked on things you CAN have is a huge burden off the mental side of induction.

3. Dont buy those "kinda cheating, kinda not" items like fruits, nuts, seeds ect...Try to stay away from these on induction.

4. Try to make a plan for some sort of work out. EVEN if its walking 1/2 mile 3 times a week. It will kick-start your metabolism. But as Atkins will suggest...wait until after 3 days or so of induction.

5. Let all your friends and family know what you are doing. This can avoid you being in a situation where junk foods ect..are being offered to you.

6. Stay away from Low Carb treats. ATLEAST until you complete induction. Just because it says "Low Carb" does not mean you should eat it. Atkins does NOT approve any sugar alcohols durring induction.

7. Try to stay away from any type of alcohol (wine, beer, vodka ect..). Even though some alcoholic drinks contain no alcohol..your body will burn alcohol before fat. So until your body gets used to buring fat as its primary source....dont drink [Smile]

8. Drink a ton of water

9. Take a multi vitamin. I take one-a-day card smart.

10. USE THIS WEBSITE! This is a great website to find things you can work. And also, help motivate you to complete your induction phase.

Good luck!

Dream, congratulations on making the choice to turn your life around. Every one reaches a point in their life where you realize you need to make changes. Take all the advice everyone has given regarding buying the right foods, drinking your water, vitamins, etc. Staying focused is the key. Losing weight is NOT easy. It will NEVER be easy but if you really want it, you can do it. It is NOT impossible. You will get lots of support here so come for it whenever you need it. A little thing I can add to suggestions is to put a "before" picture on your refrigerator door. It helped me. You can do it!

Dream ~ I am right there with you. I am 27... have been successful on atkins before..but here i am. I weigh more than i ever have. I am hoverint at the 300 mark. (i think like 295ish). I have been messing around for the last few months off and on...but on Monday 11/1 I am back on Atkins full force. I am going back into that gym. I am looking forward to it. I watched that show Biggest loser lastnight and it inspired me. I will be more than happy to do this together. It sounds like we are starting at about the same weight... I havent had surgery, but do have bad back problems (i have an extra vertabrae) and are starting at the same time. Feel free to email me if you want to buddy up on this. carrielango@hotmail.com

That is absolutely wonderful to offer your support Carrie. That's one thing that is so important. Someone that we can go to that will actually understand what we're going through. My sister and I did it together. We were our moral support. She lost 40 pounds! Support is SO important. Good luck on your weight-loss!! You can do it!

Thanks to all my new low-carb FRIENDS, thanks from the bottom of my heart. For the first time I feel like I'm not alone, I have you guys to guide me and support me. Come Nov. 1, I'm doing it. I'm re-reading the book and cleaning the kitchen and keeping the FAITH.

Dreamthin-You can do this and I will put you on my prayer list even though I have never met you. I also started Atkins'two weeks ago and the main thing that is helping me is asking God for his help and it is working. I have found that having others to pray for you helps so much. Stay in touch and remember, prayers are being said for you.
