I don't doubt that Atkins works, but for some reason, I cannot seem to lose any weight. I've been adhering strictly to the induction phase for over 2 weeks and no sign of weight loss! I have less than 10 lbs. to lose...would that have anything to do with it? I've heard about malitol, but I'm not consuming any of those indulgence bars, etc. I've even cut out cheese because I suspected that had to do with my bloating. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm getting so frustrated!

10 pounds really isn't a lot to lose, it may take a lot longer than those of us who started out needing to lose a hundred. When you say adhering strictly, do you mean strictly from the book? I have to ask that because so many people do not read the book and truly think they are doing it as intended but may be missing something. Drinking your water? Not skipping meals? Spread the carbs over the day? Not going more than 6 waking hours without eating?
I guess I would also suggest patience, we can't very well change years (in my case decades lol) of results overnight. Best of luck and hang in there!

Another suggestion is to do some excersize. Even something simple like fast-paced walking for 30 minutes around the neighborhood. It will kick start your metabolism which will help your body get rid of those 10 pounds. Just a question....what is a typical day of eating for you? What are you using as your 20 carbs?

The less you have to lose, the slower your weight loss will be. Some of us who have or had almost 100 pounds or more to lose will lose a lot during the induction phase. I lost 10 pounds during my induction phase but it was because I had over 80 pounds to lose. Now that I only have 7 more pounds to reach my goal, I am not losing more than 1 pound a week. The closer you are to your goal the slower you will lose. That's just the way it is.

I agree with everyone on this. It's important to adhere to "the book." It's also important to get enough water, get exercise, and be patient when you have only 10 lbs. to lose.
When I first started back in 1998, I lost 21 lbs. in 21 days. I was amazed! After I lost about 30 lbs, (of the 48 total I lost at that point,) it went VERY VERY SLOW. Not even a pound per week!
I gained back 15 lbs. when I fell off the wagon back then (I've sinced gained back all the weight and then some,) and those 15 lbs. were torture to re-lose. I think they actually took me about 4 months. But I had lost so quickly before...what was I doing wrong? Nothing. Just a metabolism change. Survival mode. Whatever the body does to protect its happy weight. Ifyou're 10 lbs. from where you want to be, chances are your body is perfectly content with those 10 lbs. and is hanging on to them for dear life.
I would definately check with your physician and rule out any other problems. Maybe you're allergic to something you're eating. That can cause water retention, bloating, weight gain, etc. If you're bloating, then it's very possible something else is going on. Perhaps you were even suffering from candida albicans, and the low-carbing has killed all those bacteria, but left their dead bodies in your intestine. Sounds gross, I know, but if you bloat on this diet, then it's likely something like that. Have you been eating any soy or nut products? Are you eating anything you weren't eating before? Like fish, or seeds, or oils? Definately rule out allergies and other health problems with your doc. And rule out candida, which affects both men and women and can be exacerbated by consumption of eggs and dairy! (which we definately get a lot of.)

Hi all--I'm brand new. Atkins talks about a really resistant person and how they can go on the "Fat Fast" to nudge their systems into ketosis. This is on page 272 of one of his editions (the small new paperback).
It's 1000 calories of 90% fat.
I've been on Induction for three days and haven't even gone into ketosis yet. :-( But I've been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, so I'm probably very insulin-resistant.

I know I'm not going to say this the right way but I think you'll get my meaning.......I never went into ketosis. IO used the testing strips to check. After reading up on the subject I found that I may not. I may not have "excess ketones".

Are you taking your supplements? Drinking your water..at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces is the rule of thumb. Are you getting enough carbs in per day..you should be as close to 20 as possible. Are most of your carbs coming from your intake of veggies?
I have known of some people that cheese stalls them..but remember only 3-4 ounces per day on Induction..this is including cream cheese..parmesan..blue cheese dressings..etc etc

It's been awhile since I read the book, so please remind me again why I need to eat 15-20 grams of carbs? What's wrong with eating, say, 5-10?

I'm in the same boat I'm afraid. I lost about 60 pounds on the diet about a year ago, which I promptly gained back.
I started again at the beginning of January, and have yet to lose a single pound, I've been well into ketosis since about day 2, been eating regularly etc etc, but haven't dropped a pound in over 2 weeks

Philip, go through what you've been eating to make sure there are no hidden carbs.......may I assume that you are doing the water and exercise routine too?

No, nothing really hidden. Yesterday for example I had a hamburger with nothing but 2T of low carb ketchup (2g) around 3am, some bacon for breakfast when I got home around 9am (0 gr) some bef jerky when I woke up in the afternoon (1g per ounce) and some brocoli and cheddar cheese with a steak for dinner around 7pm with some low carb ketchup (2g for the ketchup, 0g for the cheese, 0 for the steak, 5 or so for the broccoli) and tons of water, no caffine, no "low carb" candy or junkfood. Just some cheddar cheese as a snack now and then.

60 pounds or so. I get plenty of excercize trying to keep up with my dogs
the bacon (or sausage) is enough, 9am is bedtime and I'm not hungry then, nor like to eat a lot before bed.
