I started atkins at 247, did induction for two weeks lost to 233, then went off the diet for a month and did not let myself gain over 3 lbs, I would eat what ever I want as long as I exercise about 3 miles a day. Then I went back on recently and lost from 233 to 220, in two weeks, then went off for another month and have went between 219 and 221, again eating what ever, but exercising every day. I am back on again, I may stay on induction a month to lose 20lbs, then I will go off for maybe two months to maintain. I don't eat alot of junk during my maintenance, but I do have some, I have had cake a couple of times, but I pretty much have whatever, I just drink diet sodas and still kind of watch the sugar, but I have bread, macaroni, etc. I think this is working for me, it may seem like a slower way to go but in some ways its pretty quick and so much easier to stick with. I feel so much better and every time I lose 15 to 20 lbs and maintain that weight loss it seems I am able to stick to it . Does anyone else do it this way, I am female and 38

No, I don't do it that way... your body might end up getting resistant everytime you try to go back on atkins and your loss will be increasingly harder to achieve... This is basically yoyo dieting. I have been on atkins for a long time. I had medical problems unrelated to the diet and ended up having to go off of it and then ended up gaining. I re-inducted in November and have lost 96 pounds... heading towards goal. I won't go off atkins because I want to hit goal and once I do, I will stay pretty close to maintenance.

Cheri is right....this is not good. You started out with a two week induction and you're already talking about go back to induction for twice that amount of time. You're messing with your blood chemistry and your metabolism by doing this. You obviously have no problem with the induction phase, what is it that is giving you trouble after that phase?

Cheri and Dubh are correct. But REMEMBER...this is not a "DIET". This approach at eating is also meant to solve many health issues. If you swey on and off the diet, you might not be taking advantage of the health benefits that Atkins approach has to offer. I strongly suggest reading his book if you have yet to do so. You will see what I mean.

Just to add my agreement - this has to be viewed as a way of life, not a weight loss diet. Like any diet (and trust me I've tried them all) as soon as we go back to our old ways of eating we will guaranteed return to our old weight problems.
The latter stages of Atkins are just wonderful, I each such delicious and satisfying meals, no one in the family can believe I am actually still losing weight. It's been 20 months for me and I plan to continue forever (or until I die, whichever comes first lol)

I have to agree that going back and forth between this lifestyle and the high-carb lifestyle must not be good for you. I also plan to eat this way for the rest of my life.

Now it is different if you "fall off the wagon". I think almost anyone on the low carb lifestyle has had a day or 2 where they were less then perfect. But to change on and off, and on and off ect....is not very good

I do something similar to what the original post said...
During the work week I'll not eat out and I will eat right. Then I give myself one day on the weekend, be it Friday night or Sat or sun and will go out to eat with friends, drink, etc. I still don't try to binge but I do eat a dessert or get mexican, chinese, etc.
I've found that by giving myself one day to eat whatever it helps me eat right for the rest of the week. If I have an urge for pizza I know I just need to wait till the weekend and it also makes me enjoy it more.
Do you guys feel my method will screw with my body too? Or is it a little safer than stopping for a month at a time?

Honestly it is just best to look at this as a way of life..not a diet. Going off plan is not a bad thing really..the odd and I mean odd time! Dr. Atkins says that the odd thing eaten off plan will not ruin everything..but to endulge for a day or a night at a time is NOT a good thing. And a planned night off plan..is definately not a good thing.
It can screw big time with your blood sugar spiking and your cholesterol

Just had to add my two cents worth. Please think of this as a way of life and not a diet. I've been on maintenance for over a year now after a two year struggle to get the weight off. I "fell off the wagon" on a trip to Oklahoma two months ago and after only two weeks, the weight gain was rapid and wants to hang on. I tried easing back onto the maintenance program I had been on and that didn't help. I didn't gain, but stayed with the 10 lb. weight gain I foolishly allowed myself. I am now back at the Induction stage. Trust me! Once you are able to add a few carbs you don't want to go back. Each time taking off just a few pounds is more and more difficult. I gained 10 pounds before I got wise to what was happening and it is very very slow going back off - about 1/2 pound every other day. I don't feel as good as I did while sticking to Atkins. I realize how stupid I was to get off track and cannot visualize someone intentionally going through the Induction phase over and over again!

I follow the words of the good Doctor as spelled out in DANDR. I'm not interested in walking near that slippery slope with carbs. I'm not sure I'd get back on track.

IF I am in a plateau, I do the same thing. After all the research Ive done since 4-2003 it is my best means of success. Its all in how ones body is designed, just as some cant do the Atkins, it takes others their own way of dealing. I do know and do agree that this is a way of life, not a diet, BUT, I started on Atkins until I maintained and then from that point onward, I did not follow everything by the book, I do my own way of low carbing and have done great thus far. I say whatever is working for them at present is ok, and perhaps they may have to learn the hard way , but for me it just always worked. Im like Matt, I am a lowcarber 5-6 days out of the week and if I crave something or want to eat out 'normally' then I do just that. And in all honesty, it is what has kept me out plateauing and it is also what has kept me sane and motivated on this new way of eating. My buddies that I coach thru their this, I also recommend this as well and they are zooming thru this with flying colors. Of course, as Jailay stated, its a major matter if you entail exercise daily and consume that water. Without the water and exercise, I WOULD NOT be allowing one cheat day per week.
