I had posted a previous message about struggling with a hellacious stall--happy to say it's over! Whoopee! I had previously lost 36 pounds, then regained 10. I'm now back to my 36 pound loss and continuing in the right direction. I took to heart the suggestions from Noxzema and others that "Malitol is evil." There are many of us (so I've discovered) who can not consume sugar alcohols, the primary sweetening ingredient in most of the low-net-carb candies and cookies out there. This was heavy news to me because I thought they were a God-send. Since I have stopped eating low-carb candy bars and cookies, my weight loss is now back on track.

Very crucial point. I cannot have sugar alcohols either. My body treats them as real sugar and they mess me up as far as my hypoglycemia goes too. It's great to hear that by simply cutting out those fake foods you got your loss going again. Congrats!

Chodie, one easy way to know if it has sugar alcohol is by looking at the label. A lot of companies will have a message similar to...
"For those counting carbs, count only 1 gram as sugar alcohol and fiber have no effect on blood sugar"
Ect....Malitol is one of them. I agree it is evil (yet very addicting). Like ANdrew, when I first had some of the great new Oreo's and other treats with sugar alcohols...I found myself stalling on weight loss, AND having quite the upset stomach.

Unfortunately, chances are if it is labeled "low carb" or "for those watching their carb intake" it will contain some sort of sugar alcohol. There are a few exceptions like peanut butter, but not many.

I am very new to all of this. I have found these great little sugar free pecan pies. They contain 27.3 total carbs 24 of them are sugar alcohol and it has 1.77 fiber. So the total effective Carbs are 1.6. Are the to good to be true? Is Maltitol really bad?

The saying on this site is "Maltitol is Evil".......we try to live by it.....sugar alcohols affect your blood sugar levels which is bad.......remember the old adage "if it sounds too good to be true"............stay away from sugar alcohols.
