If you do decide to stay on Induction (past the first 2 weeks), your reward is that you can now add an ounce of delicious nuts and seeds to your daily intake and see how you do. Nuts contain protein, fat and carbohydrats, but a significant portion of the carbs is fiber. Of course, you need to count the grams of Net Carbs in your daily tally.

Here's how to estimate a one-ounce portion of the following nuts and seeds:

24 Almonds
18 Cashews
20 Filberts (Hazelnuts)
10-12 medium macadamias
28 shelled peanuts
20 pecan halves
157 pine nuts (pignoli)
47 pistachios
14 walnut halves
1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
1 medium-size handful sesame seeds
3 tablespoons of shelled sunflower seeds

It is best to stick with macadamias (they have the highest ratio of fat to carbohydrates), almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, pine nuts and walnuts at the start. Dont overlook pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds, all of which add a delicious crunch to salads and cooked veggies.

You can also use ground nuts and seeds in lieu of bread crumbs before baking or sauteing chicken breasts, veal, scallops or fish fillers. Like all good things, nuts and seeds should be eating in moderation.

Be sure to avoid nuts that have been coated with sugar or honey.

One last caveat about nuts and seeds: Like chips, they are notoriously easy to keep eating once you start. Never eat directly from a large bag or can. Instead, portion out your daily allowance and eat only that.

can i eat my 20 carbs a day as low carb bread or low carb ice cream instead of all vegetables? I' know this will not give the nutritional benefits but will i still lose as much weight on the induction phase? I just honestly have never been able to stomach many vegetables but will take a vitamin supplement.

jailay you might want to stay away from the low carb ice cream...at least until you are ready to move past insuction. Most of the low carb ice cream contains sugar alcohol. While sugar alcohol has little to no effect on your blood sugar, remember your body burns the alcohol FIRST before it burns fat. Durring induction, you want your body to adapt to buring FAT as its primary source of fuel. So try to avoid the ice cream! [Smile]

The fact that your body burns alcohol before fat that actually refers to ethyl alcohol, as opposed to sugar alcohols, from what all low carb sweets are made.

NO...as the only healthy way to do Atkins is by the book. And Dr. Atkins says your main source of carbs for the day should come from veggies.

Why is limit for nuts 1 oz., why isn't the amount of carbs the yardstick for the limit of nuts.

In other words if you can have an ounce of cashews, why can't you have 2 oz. of macadamias or almonds?

Hi, I am new to this, but essentially I have not lost any weight on Atkins, which I am really disheartened about, but I feel so much more better, I react to carbs now, I become lethargic and disorentated if I eat carbs, so I stick with it. I have tried the fat motabilising diet in the book and still nothing, been on the induction..... please HELP, what can I do

Violet, you have to give us more information. Give us a daily meal plan so we can see if there's something you are eating that is giving you the problem. How much weight are you trying to lose. How much water are you drinking. Have you been diagnosed with any type of insulin resistance or pre-diabetes, thyroid problems.......

Brooklyn, the type of carb makes the difference. Nuts have good (fiber) carbs. You ask if you can have 1 ounce of cashews why not 2 ounces of macadamias. First obviously is that is double the amount. There is also a difference between 2 ounces in weight as opposed to volume. I think the list is by weight.....Noxzema, can you please confirm this?

My last bloods were all clear, I have polycystic ovary and take estelle for that.
I have two scrambled eggs with cream, nuts usually macadamia for morning T or cheese or a vege such as brocoli or aspargus. Lunch lettuce with cheese or pate usually 2 oz sometimes a tomateo as well, afternoon T ,asparagus then evening would be steak with some salad usually lettuce and through out the day I have coffee usually decaf with cream and I have a sweet tooth so I may have a mouse made out of cream with coffee and splenda or berries with cream and splenda.
usualy is same ole same ole each day. I drink up to eight glasses of water a day and I play sport
twice a week.
Hey thanks for your help

You are so right...confirmation!

Violet...the nuts might be stalling you...as for some people..the nuts will stall them right away..there really is no reason for this..other than everyone is different.

Are you counting your carbs? How many carbs are you getting per day.

Another..is some people..cheese stall them (thank goodness I am not one of them)

Make sure you are getting as close to 20 carbs per day as possible!

"Up to" 8 glasses of water a day isn't enough for me. A minimum of 8 is more accurate, and I often make it to a gallon. I don't have the book with me but I believe it says a MINIMUM of 8 glasses.

The rule of thumb ...is 1/2 your body weight in ounces per day.
