I have been on the Atkins diet for almost 2 weeks now. So far I have lost 5lbs. I have tried to read everything I can about using a low carb diet.

Now I am so confused about it. I thought anything having no carbs was "safe" to consume. I like sugarfree jello for a snack. No carbs, no sugars, nada, however it does use aspartame, which I am now reading may not be a good sugar sub.

I also like to drink sugarfree Kool-Aid, which again has no carbs, no sugars but uses aspartame. Are these working against my low carb diet?

Also, I was reading about netcarbs on the back of my Atkins breakfast bar and saw this formula for figuring out total net carbs: "For those controlling their carbs, count only 2 grams of the 13 grams of the Total Carbs in this product. Subtract dietary fiber and glycerin AND SUGAR ALCOHOL, which all have a minimal impact on blood sugar".

Now, what is confusing to me, is that some of you here have written that you should avoid sugar alcohol all together! I don't understand why Atkins subtracts it as a nonimpacting ingredient but yet others say stay away from it.

I really want to succeed using this diet but I'm so confused about it!

I have tried atkins induction and had the same problem as you. I only lost 3 pounds in two weeks!!!! I found out what worked best for me is to eat nothing that contains any sugar substitutes. IE only eggs, tuna, cheese, steak, etc. I then lost 11 more pounds on my 2nd attempt. I also didnt drink any diet pop and left the coffee pot turned off!! [Smile]

Phase One -

You should be consuming only raw food product with a few exceptions. That is meat, cheese, and 3 cups of veggies that are the ok phase part of the diet. Very few of the atkins food products are listed as ok for phase one. You may try looking on www.aktins.com for a better idea. One thing to note atkins has just started changing product to include information about what phase of the diet what of their products would be ok to use. You will see a little color coded box on the wrappers telling the phases the product is ok for. As far as other brands of products you really need to avoid high net carb products when on induction phase. You might look as these foods as a reward to use them when you move phase two and use them in moderation.

Wichix,
I have answered some of your questions IN CAPS.

I thought anything having no carbs was "safe" to consume. I like sugarfree jello for a snack. No carbs, no sugars, nada, however it does use aspartame, which I am now reading may not be a good sugar sub.

NOT ONLY IS ASPARTAME BAD FOR A LOW-CARB DIET, BUT IT'S ALSO BAD FOR YOUR BODY!

I also like to drink sugarfree Kool-Aid, which again has no carbs, no sugars but uses aspartame. Are these working against my low carb diet?

YES. ASPARTAME CAN ACTUALLY TRIGGER INSULIN PRODUCTION IN SOME PEOPLE. YOU MAY ALSO HAVE A SENSITIVITY TO IT (IT USUALLY PRODUCES SAME REACTION AS MSG, INCLUDING WATER RETENTION, HEADACHES, ETC.) USUALLY YOUR BEST BET WITH ASPARTAME IS TO USE IT IN A PRODUCT THAT IS COOKED. I AM ALLERGIC TO NUTRASWEET, BUT IF I HAVE SUGAR-FREE COOK & SERVE JELL-O PUDDING, I HAVE NO REACTION. THIS IS BECAUSE HEATING THE CHEMICAL RELEASES SOME OF ITS TOXINS (BUT IT ALSO REMOVES ITS SWEET TASTE, SO YOU END UP WITH A MORE BITTER FOOD.) I WOULD RECOMMEND STEERING CLEAR OF IT UNTIL YOU HAVE AT LEAST PASSED INDUCTION AND MOVED ON TO THE NEXT PHASE.

IN SENSITIVE INDIVIDUALS, SUGAR ALCOHOLS ARE BASICALLY THE SAME THING AS SUGAR. THEY CAN ELEVATE BLOOD SUGAR AND THEY ALSO CAUSE INTESTINAL DISTRESS, WHICH INCLUDES BLOATING. MY RULE OF THUMB IS "STAY NATURAL." GLYCERIN AND OTHER SUGAR ALCOHOLS LIKE MALTITOL, ETC. ARE CHEMICALS ONCE THEY'VE BEEN PROCESSED. CHEMICALS ARE BAD.

I really want to succeed using this diet but I'm so confused about it!

ALL OF US WERE CONFUSED WHEN WE BEGAN. IT WILL TAKE TRIALS ON YOUR PART TO SEE WHAT FOODS OR ADDITIVES YOU CAN OR CAN'T TOLERATE. EVERY PERSON IS DIFFERENT AND WILL REACT TO INGREDIENTS DIFFERENTLY. TRY DOING A STRICT INDUCTION WITH ONLY THE BASICS, AS LOWCARBGURU POINTED OUT, AND THEN ONE AT A TIME, OCCASIONALLY, TRY SOME OF THE "FAKE" FOODS AND SEE IF THEY SLOW YOUR WEIGHT LOSS OR CAUSE ANY OTHER SYMPTOMS. THEN YOU'LL KNOW WHAT DOES OR DOESN'T WORK FOR YOUR PARTICULAR BODY.

HOPE THIS HELPS!!

One issue that most people forget about, WICHIX, is EXERCISE!

Are you exercising at least 4 days a week, moderately, for at least 1 hour? If you do that, you'll get results!

And, keep coming back to this forum for support.

Best of sucess to you.

I agree totally with Tiffany

Especially sugar alcohols.

Remember..Dr. Atkins never said anything about consuming LC snacks and junk on Induction..or at anytime.

Atkins Nutritionals..of course have a different story..and have changed the Induction List..it is now called the Master List.

Personally..I go by what Dr. Atkins says in his book..he wanted this plan to be pure and simple..and as far as I am concerned it is the only way to go.

LC snacks and bread and such..cause stalls, digestive distress..and cravings.

Stay away from them..that is my advice..even stay away from the shakes..at least throughout Induction.

I think now..it is all about the mighty buck..as most things are..LC junk..is NOT a good thing in my opinion

Malitol is evil..Just say no to LC treats
