I was on this diet for almost two weeks and I was passing ketones but I had a seminar to attend this weekend and all they served was lots of bread, muffins, pasta lunches, and coffee. So, needless to say I ate a lot of things I should not have. I am now not passing any ketones and I wanted to know do I have to go through the induction period again or just wait till I start passing ketones or how does that work. Are you always suppose to pass ketones or is it only in the induction period? Also if I am not losing weight but I am passing ketones is it working. I am not that overweight but I did want to lose about 10 lbs and keep it off as well as start eating better since I have become older and it is hard to maintain my weight. If anyone can give me some input I would appreciate it. Thank you!

Deane, hi! First off, did you take your measurements before you began or do you have a pair of jeans or some other article of clothing that was or is maybe just a bit too tight? I ask because I find that measurements and/or a tight piece of clothing that becomes more wearable over time (and not because I've stretched it out! ) is a more reliable 'loss' indicator for most people than the scale.
I know that Atkins places great importance in passing ketones, but I have to tell you--ketostix are probably some of the least scientific indicators of fat loss possible! How much water or other fluids you drink affects the color, how much salt you eat affects the color, when you use the ketostix, how old they are--well, you get the picture. They're not exactly a 'controlled marker' under normal conditions. It's entirely possible to be losing weight and burning fat WITHOUT passing sufficient ketones to get the color on the ketostix in Atkins' optimal range--so I actually wouldn't worry about whether you're in ketosis as long as you're eating correctly and on plan.
And here's my sometimes controversial take on 'cheating'--your mileage may vary (YMMV)
You're eating this way for better health, and maybe to lose a few pounds along the way. You're in it for the long haul. You've lived through your first weekend conference, and likely discovered that in the future you'll need to plan to bring your own snacks, and eat outside of the provided food if you want to eat on plan. But yesterday is done and today is staring you in the face. So I would eat on plan TODAY, drink LOTS of water, get in a little exercise tonight if you can, and not worry about starting induction all over again.
Atkins 20g carb limit for induction was supposed to be a cleansing period, not the blueprint for eating for life. If you had finished the induction period and were at the point where you gradually add carbs back in at 5g per week, do that for this week (in other words, eat around 25g net carbs per day.) If you hadn't 'finished' your 14 day induction, then finish it, with today as day number (fill in the blank), and continue with induction until you hit 14 days.
Other people may have different recommendations, but this is what works for me. Hope it helps!

Yes, it does help. Thank you for your reply. I have started back on this WOE and I have not gained any weight so that is good. I did not measure myself but I know I have lost. I can tell from my jeans. I wonder is there like only a certain amount you can lose because I have always had a hard time losing the last 5-7 lbs?

The last 10 lbs. are usually the slowest. They'll come off, but your body knows what you're doing and resists it because instinctually, it always wants to have a little extra padding for emergencies. It's normal for those last pounds to take a LONG TIME to come off.

I believe diet and excercise and moderation are the three most important factors to weight loss and feeling better. What has worked for me, and I continue to maintain it, is to eat RIGHT 6 times a day ..6 days a week...Excercise at least 5-6 times a week, and have one day to yourself to eat what you want and don't excercise on that day! (I use sundays) I run/jog between 10-20 miles per week and eat a balanced diet of carboydrates and protein and 3-5 servings of fruits & vegetables per day. This way I am sure my body gets the nutrients it needs. I drink lots of water daily, and take a multi vitamin everyday along with fish oil supplemnts because the body NEEDS the omega 3 fatty acid, and since I don't eat much fish, this is a neccessity...and imperative to good health. Flax seed oil is also very good for Omega 3 fatty acid. Not only do you begin to look better, but I also have an abundance of energy I've never had before, and I also sleep better. If you want to lose weight, diet and excercise & moderation of the right foods can't be beat! You can incorporate weight training also if you want to tone better and bulk up, but right now I am involved in the cardio/eating right aspect of my program. I am NOT knocking the Atkins plan, I am simply putting forth my success story and opinions. Although I do not follow Atkins, I believe it does work for quick weight loss.
