I have just started Atkinson last Monday, and have a few questions. First, caffeine. I cannot live without at least one big cup of regular coffee in the morning. While I have given up the sugar for splenda, I am still worried about the caffeine, because a lot of things I've read have said no to it. Do they say avoid it because it will keep you from losing or simply because you might crave sweets and in general feel bad. I can deal with it if it's just cravings but I'm gonna be upset if I find I'm not losing b/c of the caffeine.
Secondly, should I go by the net effective carbs that so many places like Blimpies and Hardees are advertising? Or do I have to count the total carbs? And should I eat absolutely no bread at all or is it okay to eat low carb bread and pitas as long as I don't go over the 20g of carbs per day?
If there's any other tips anyone would like to share, I welcome them. Thanks!

Hello I actually just started atkins last month and I have always been addicted to snack foods. But actually eating certain nuts (high protein, low carbs) really satisfied my cravings. Macadamia nuts are my favorite. Mauna Loa has dry roasted nuts that have really low carbs and they're really yummy! I actually lost 32 lbs. in my first few weeks, and the macadamia nuts helped so much.
Just a suggestion!
I have some nice low-carb recipes with nuts if you're interested. Just let me know

Me too, I drink coffee all day. Basiclly, what caffeen will do to you is lower your blood suger level to the point that your will crave sweets. It will have very little or no affect on your induction. At home I do drink 50/50 coffee because of the wife, I have gotton use to it. I did try decaff (dang, its nasty). At work, I drink coffee all day with my bottled waters.
I shouldnt do anything to you, just no suger, Splinda.

All you Folks that are doing Induction. Stay away from the restrants that have Low-Carb menus. Stick to the basics for the 14 days, High Proten some veggies, and vitamins and allot of water.
As far as snacks go....pork rins, nuts, NO Lays chips things like that. Your body isnt going to go into lipolysis/ketosis. Good Luck Gang.

I'm back on Induction after a pretty long "cheating" phase which I'm sure had something to do with my SAD--I feel half-dead in the winter and crave all the high-carb junk I can get my hands on! Now, though, I'm going into my second week of Induction: no cheats, no screwing around. And I feel better already than I have all winter. Last year on Atkins I lost 15 pounds and could fit into clothes I'd just about given up ever being able to wear again--and I hadn't even begun Atkins till July!! So this year I've got a head start, and combined with my daily workouts (which I actually do and ENJOY !), I've taken off 12 pounds virtually effortlessly. I remember back in the day when I was trying and dying on the low-fat, high-carb route. I was hungry and tired and irritable all the time and had to force myself to work out three or four times a week. That went on for TWO YEARS and I lost nothing except hope.
God bless Dr. Atkins! His courage and genius have helped so many of us who were being set up to fail by the "standard" diet industry. On this eating plan, I know how I'm gonna look this summer, and that's damn good!

LaVerne, induction is only supposed to be a kick start, de-tox kind of thing. I know a lot of people stay around 20g for a very long time, but it can be very boring, and may not necessarily help your weight loss efforts. It really wasn't the way Atkins designed the plan. After the two week Induction phase, if you're still not feeling very well, 20g carbs may just be too low for you to maintain. You are probably able to successfully lose weight at 25, 30, even 45g carbs--and that carb level will keep your menus a LOT more interesting. Try adding 5g carbs from healthy fresh veggies this week, and see if that helps in the 'feeling better' department.
I'd avoid the processed low carb products as much as possible, except for travelling or emergencies, and spend your carbs on things that are actually good for you to eat--dark leafy green veggies, a little cheese now and then, a bit of fruit like berries or melon, etc. A half cup of cooked broccoli is under 5g carbs, and a cup of chopped raw spinach in a salad is only about 3g carbs. That 'bowl of low carb ice cream at night' contains lots of stuff that could be slowing your body's transition to low carb--glycerin, sugar alcohols, etc. Make sure you take a good vitamin supplement, use your carbs to get some fresh vegetables in every day, and drink plenty of water to help your body transition to digesting proteins and fats first, and doing without carbs. Also, get plenty of rest, so that it isn't any more stressed than the major diet change makes it. Hope that helps.
