Since June 1999 my hubby and I have eaten lo-carb style (started with Protein Power, but still restrict really high fat, artificial sweeteners, etc). I have lost 25-30 lbs and have kept it off. We eat no spuds, pasta, breads, grains or sugar, normally. Very occasionally will eat a special roll/bread or have a dessert in a restaurant - few and far between. Major carb intake is having added beets, corn, blackeyed peas etc., occasionally. In addition to weight loss, my Crohn's disease has 'disappeared'. Had firm diagnosis, and that has now been changed to milder IBS. Anyhow, major issue has been sleep problems.... don't go into REM much - wake up and am exhausted most days. Have had every test known to man (blood, CT scan, etc.) and now am scheduled for a sleep study next week. The reason I'm posting here is that I got a whole box of Hershey's chocolate candies for Valentines Day from a friend. I totally 'lost it' discipline-wise, (knowing by the way that I will get back on my eating plan right away), and devoured the huge box in less than a week (6-7 rich candies per day)! About the third day I noticed that I was sleeping much better. Last night I slept like a baby and am feeling refreshed today. I've also gained four pounds! :> ) So... is it common for people on this eating plan to have sleep disorders for this long? The sleep problem has been a big issue for me, and now this temporary reprieve is such a blessing. Ah, to be skinny and exhausted, or fat and rested??? Help, anyone?

This is just an idea and it is up to you to consider it. I would say you are going up and down on your sugar levels in your body. I know you said you don't eat sweets very often I do see some in your eating pattern. Those beets and corn have alot of sugar in them. This might mean your body goes into a high sugar level and than you bottom out. Try taking some GTF Chromium picolinate to level out your sugar so you don't seasaw back and forth. Also add some calium to your diet and be sure to take a dose before bedtime as this will help you to sleep. The correct doseage for the chromium is 1x 3 a day. Since you didn't say how old you are I would guess from 1,000mg to 1.500mg a day on the calium. Please spread your calium out during the day. Posts: 69 | From: Blackshear, Ga | Registered: Jan 2002

Thanks.. you have some good suggestions. I guess when I said 'sugar', I was referring to any 'sweets', i.e. candies, cakes, etc. I 'do a dessert' about once per month max, and the corn/beets thing maybe once or twice per week. I will keep my eyes open, however, for other sources of sugar that I may be not noticing.
I do take 5 Twin Lab Tri Boron's per day with good calcium in them (bkfst, lunch, dinner), magnesium, etc., as well as their Daily Two Cap multivitamins w/o iron - also good ones. I used to take chromium, but had dropped it off... can add again and see if that makes a difference.
Age-wise - I'm gonna be the big 'six-oh' this year. Wow! Time flies when you're having fun.
Thanks again.
