Hi, I started the Atkins diet a few days ago and I've got a couple of questions. After a big, protein only(like steak and eggs)meal I get this intense craving for something sweet; is this normal? Also, since I started the diet, I'm feeling really "washed out", no energy, especially in the mornings. Does this "come with the territory" too? Thanks for any advice/answer from any of you experienced Atkins diet people out there and have a Great One!

Hi there Ernie.. Welcome aboard the LC~WOE. I also am a beginner.. I have 8 days into induction. I must admit.. I too have had some cravings for something sweet here and there.. but I have resisted.. I have read that "L Glutamine" really helps curb sugar cravings.. and is sold at most health food stores.. Maybe you could post a typical days menu.. that we could take a look at.. are you getting your 20 grams of carbs a day? I too have been feeling washed out lately. I fought the headaches.. and now feel kind run down. I am taking my Atkins supplements.. are you taking them?? Or if not the specific atkins supplement.. some other kind of multivitamin.? I've heard that the first two weeks of induction are the worst.. so lets stick with it.. It can only get better from here!

Hi Marina, Thanks much for the reply. I'm doing ZERO carbs; this is maybe too extreme for my system? I had tried Atkins about a year ago and couldn't get into anything but "mild" ketosis so I got discouraged and quit trying. Thinking back, (and doing more reading) I think my problem may have been the diet colas so I've cut them out completely this time. Also I have been having a morning cup of coffee every morning(with about half a packet of Sweet & Low and a drop of non dairy cream); guess I'll cut this out. I'm determined to make it work this time; I'm 51, gaining more weight and starting to develop high blood pressure and I want to stop this in it's tracks whatever it takes.

Hello Ernie Ray, Im on my second run with this program and trust me you'll get your energy in no time. It just takes a bit for your body to ajust to this new way of life. Oh and you may want to try a sugar substitute called Splenda. Its wonderful!!!! no aftertaste and taste alot like sugar. My husband who lives for his coffee cant tell the difference at all.

Hi Ernie, I'd done Atkins before and always experienced increased energy except this last time (I started the day after X'mas). One day I also had a headache that wouldn't leave me. Fortunately, among the books I was reading to motivate myself I had "Protein Power" and found in there that when one goes fully into ketosis a lot of fluid is lost and along with it a lot of SODIUM and POTASSIUM as well. Dr. Eades recommends a few pills of a potassium supplement, available at any drugstore and most supermarkets, or the use of diet salt (potassium chloride). I had some at home so I had 1/4 tsp. straight up (chased with water, of course!) and amazingly enough I felt fine shortly thereafter. After that I've been careful to use some of that to "salt" my veggies. Please do this as soon as possible as loss of potassium can even be dangerous.
Regarding cravings for sugar, it could be that your body is asking you to provide it with some carbs but I'd bet it's the coffee . In the past, I "had" to have my coffee but then I suffered from sugar cravings. I ditched the coffee because of my B/P and sleep problems and now I'm happy with my S/F jello w/cream, cheesecake, 1/2 of an Atkins bar and sometimes nothing. Also, before I could do Atkins this time, I had to "ease" myself into low-carb by doing the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet for about a week in order to minimize my out-of-control sugar cravings. My chocolates began tasting too sweet, then I went sugar-free but not on Induction. I didn't try to count carb grams for at least another week. I'm glad I didn't rush because as it was I started feeling run-down so I think any sooner and I might've failed. Please be aware of the fact that you don't really have to turn the Ketostix purple and sometimes any shade to prove that you're in ketosis. Since ketones are also excreted through our lungs and in our stool, if you drink a lot of water, what's left could be too "diluted" to be detected, so don't be discouraged by that. I think it doesn't mean a whole lot because the first time I did Atkins 7 years ago I barely showed "trace" and at best "moderate" and I still lost 10 lbs. the first 2 weeks not even following the diet to the letter. However, years later, I got stuck after only losing a few pounds yet the ketostix said I was still "burning fat" (??). I think that over the years 1) I became insulin resistant (I was hypoglycemic) and 2) my thyroid slowed down which made it hard for me to lose weight.
And keep stress to a minimum! The release of cortisol will keep you from losing even if you're doing everything right. The important thing is to bring your body back into balance and restore health. So let the coffee go (it's only a "crutch", my friend), eat some "green" food, and get your supplements and you'll be alright. Best wishes,
LowCarbLatina

Just a few thoughts here.. I'm definately no expert.. starting my 9th day here.. but in all the reading I've done, I'm positive that you are suposed to be taking in your 20 grams of carbs per day. I don't know if you are familiar with www.fitday.com but its a very helpful website, where we can plug in our daily menu choices/portions. The website, breaks our food down for us in grams of carbs/protein/fat.. and also gives us a total calorie count for the day. I also recommend using Splenda for sweetener, as it is the only sweetener Atkins also recommends. I still have to drink my cup of coffee in the morning too. I realize it is a crutch, but have enjoyed this crutch since I was a little girl.. why my parents let me drink coffee with them when I was 5 years old is a good question.. but one I'll never get answered!! LOL.... Please do research the vitamin supplements, they are a crucial part of this diet.. As you are not taking in every food you normally have.. you will be missing some nutrients.. and don't want to be ill!!.. My local Wal-Mart carried both of Dr. Atkins recommended nutrients.. (Dieters #3 Supplement and Essential Oils) And as others have mentioned the potassium is very important.. if you don't get on other supplements.. look into it.. don't forget.. water.. water... water.. Best of Luck To You!!!!..

The coffee is almost definately your problem. Why? Because caffeine produces insulin!!!!
We low-carbers are trying to avoid insulin because it makes fat, causes heart disease, and also makes us crave sugars.
Try to drink decaf. I know it's hard...but the flavored ones by companies like Green Mountain are great. If you can't quit, at least drink it half decaf. Otherwise you may find the diet isn't as successful for you.
P.S. - if you eat Atkins Bars or other protein bars, beware. They have hidden carbs and the label doesn't explain the effect on glucose levels that some of the ingredients have. I've heard that the 2g Atkins bar actually has 28g worth of insulin-stimulating carbs!!! I'll post more info on that as I find it.
I agree about potassium. I was getting awful leg cramps last time I dieted and sure enough, doc said levels were dangerously low. I took Atkins Basic #3 and then everything was fine. Yes, Wal-Mart carries all of the Atkins products and they're much less expensive than your local healthfood or GNC store.
There are also some great online vendors (visit the shopping section of this site) who sell vitamins at lower prices.
The first 3 days for me are the hardest. I get headaches, horrible acid reflux, and feel like sleeping all day. But then all of a sudden one day I'll wake up and have more energy and feel better than ever! Be patient... as your body adjusts you'll start to feel better than you have in years.
Check out my dessert recipes section (not on the BB, but on the actual CarbHealth site) for ideas when you need something sweet. Splenda is the best substitute...it's actually MADE from sugar.

Thanks Much Marina, Latina, and Tiffany! I'm checking out Walmart for the Atkins vitamins/suppliments today. The coffee is history. I had the topping (beef and cheese) off of about 6 slices of Pizza Hut pizza last night before going to bed; hope this is o.k. on Atkins. I didn't feel that bad when I woke up this morning but I still had that feeling that it would be no trouble to stay in bed all day. Had 3 hot dogs covered with Bunker Hill chili (no beans) for late breakfast although I wasn't really that hungry. I'm thinking about having a side salad later in the day for my carbs; does that sound o.k.? There's so much stuff out there in the stores that has SUGAR in it, it's amazing when you read labels! Sorry to be so long winded; thanks again!

Hi Ernie, as long as the pizza topping didn't have a lot of sauce that was fine. Do keep an eye on it because most pizza sauces contain some sugar/corn syrup which will raise the carb count quickly. On Induction it's under 7 gms. per meal, even less if any of your snacks have any at all. Same with the chili, the other day I tried finding a beanless chili that was low-carb and got frustrated because starch and/or sugar were added to all the brands I saw.
As Tiffany said, the idea is to avoid insulin production. The Atkins bars and any other packaged products may or may not raise it, it depends on the person. Just in case, it's better leaving them for the next stages. I personally have just 1/2 of one at a time, which doesn't throw me off ketosis. The salad will work better for you with your steak or whatever protein source you choose but a small one with olive oil and vinegar will be fine as a snack, I do that sometimes. I'm losing very slowly right now maybe because I'm not exercising enough and I forget to keep track of my carbs - good one to preach, huh? LOL
