Splenda has known an increasing popularity for the past years, mainly due to the impact of the South Beach diet on the public. Sales have reportedly increased 50 percent in the past year.
The sweetener was introduced in 2000, initially as a product for diabetics, but it became more and more popular, with the obesity problem becoming more acute and the success of low-carb diets, particularily in the US with the South Beach and Atkins diet.
The tremendous success of the sweetener has resulted on one side into the scarcity of the product on the market and on the other side, into litigation.
The problem now is that demand outstrips supply, the production capacity cannot face the multiple requests.
As a result of demand from consumers, Splenda has been introduced in many low-carb products, from soft drinks, icecream, cereals, all types of bars, to candy, jams and jellies, syrups, and from this, a huge request. Estimations were made of approximately 10,000 products using Splenda.
And this is not all, the demand will increase in the near future: Splenda, which is is based on sucralose, has been banned in the European Union, but it will be introduced in all member countries in 2005.
