I've installed a modification to this board that allows you to instant message someone else who is surfing the board at the same time as you. When you click the "im" link at the very top navigation menu, you will see which users are currently online (another easy way to tell is that at the top of the category or post listing there is your name, and anyone else who is here at the time.)
If you see no other names listed, or see a number, then that is an unregistered visitor and they cannot be IM'd.
