On the Atkins website, there is a comment about aspartame (aka "Nutrasweet" & "Equal") - the artificial sweetner used in most popular soda's.
To quote the Atkins site: ".... An observation at The Atkins Center has been that when certain people discontinue their use of aspartame, their weight loss resumes."
The issue, as I understand it, seems to be that aspartame mimics sugar enough that it can still cause an insulin response.
Their recommended sugar replacers are Sucralose (aka "Splenda"), Stevia, Saccharin (aka "Sweet-n-Low"), or Acesulfame potassium (aka "acesulfame K").
I use Diet Rite, which is caffeine free, or Shasta Diet soda's, all made with sucralose.
Hope this helps!

I really hate being the bearer of bad news, but in some sensitive people the aspertame makes their weightloss stall. Of course I'm not sure what my excuse is, I've been stalled for 3 weeks. Have you tried putting lemon juice in your water with a little Splenda? That works sometimes. Or sometimes I add Lime Juice to be different. Just a couple of suggestions. Of course it is hard to call off all soda, just maybe limit yourself to one can. Judy

I,ve been on the diet for a little over eight weeks and lost 30lbs. but I was sick of water on about the third week. I started trying the diet soda and didnot lose any more weight during the next two weeks. so, i went off the soda and started the lemon water and the weight came off. I hope this will help.

Stop n Shop carries two diet sodas made with Splenda.......one is called Waist Watchers (the orange wonderful).......the other is by a company called Canfield's (they have two flavors I'm aware of Swiss Creme and Chocolate Fudge which tastes just like a chocolate covered cherry. I take the chocolate cherry and put a no sugar fudgsicle in it for dessert). From what I understand, diet sodas are permissible. I did read in one of the books (don't remember if it were Atkins or South Beach) that you should make sure it has no caleries (but I don't recall seeing a diet soda that has calories).

Have you tried the flavored water? Before I started eating this way my kids loved it and I hated it. But ya know how things start tasting different after eating this way for a while? Well, who woulda thunk it, but I am addicted to them now! My faves are Key Lime, Sour Watermelon & Strawberry Lemonade. They also make White Grape, Peach Melba, Grapefruit, and a couple of others that I cant think of. I've found different flavors at different stores: United Supermarket, Dollar Store & Wal-Mart. I'm would think they carry them at most or all grocery stores. Even though the thought of more water to some is a turn-off, give these a try. I think you'll be surprised. Oh, by the way, they are caffeine, sugar and sodium free.

I have been drinking 2 brands of diet soda that use Splenda as the sweetener. One brand is by Diet Rite and it has several flavors. The other (my personal preference) is Diet Hanson's and my favorite flavors are Root Beer and Ginger Ale. Hansons says 0 carbs on label. Other flavors include: Tangerine/Lime and Black Cherry. Also, I drink decaffinated Green Tea and sweeten with Spenda or Stevia. I limit myself to one can of soda per day and drink lots of green tea on weekend. I've lost 26 pounds since the middle of August.

The Hanson's sodas are great - I love the black cherry. I actually had to stop getting the Canfield's - I didn't realize it had aspartame, I thought it had sucralose. I haven't seen Diet Rite in so long that I thought they stopped making it. Glad to know it's still around.

But take it from a former PEPSI-O-HOLIC..giving up soda can be the best thing you can do.
Take the 2 week water challenge. For 2 weeks force yourself to drink ONLY water...no sodas whatsoever. And believe me I will almost guarantee that after the 2 weeks..you will NOT want your soda...your body will crave the water you need. And you will be so proud of yourself.
If I can give up soda..believe me anyone can..it was nothing before starting Atkins for me to drink up to 12 cans of Pepsi per day.
I imagine Pepsi has noticed the loss since I have quit LMAO
