Hi, just joined this board. My name is Nan & I live in north Alabama. My husband is a diabetic (not very well controlled)but I am determined to get his sugar under control & for both of us to loose weight. One question I have, what sweetener do you like to use, we have been trying the sweet n low, but i don't really like the aftertaste, neither one of us like the nutrasweet at all. Also which ones can be used in cooking? Thanks for any info.

Nan

Hi Nan. Welcome!

It seems like the majority of low-carbers are using a relatively new sweetener called Splenda. It is available in most supermarkets now, or online if you can't find it locally.

It tastes very much like sugar, has no aftertaste to me (although my friends notice a tiny one.) It is made from sugar but is safe for diabetics because it is processed differently.

It is also referred to as "sucralose." Many diet soft drinks (such as Diet Rite, Waist Watcher, etc.) are now starting to use it (and sugar-free Jolly Rancher gel/jello cups are made with Splenda now too!)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome. I have seen splenda here in the stores, I will try it. Can it be used in cooking too?
