From the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse website..............Hypoglycemia, also called low blood sugar, occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) level drops too low to provide enough energy for your body's activities. In adults or children older than 10 years, hypoglycemia is uncommon except as a side effect of diabetes treatment, but it can result from other medications or diseases, hormone or enzyme deficiencies, or tumors.

Well, how diabetes is related with hypoglycemia? Diabetic patients are already on antidiabetic drugs. There are chances that when they will take antidiabetic drugs like Insulin, then blood suger level will decrease. If this level reach a certain limit, we call it as hypoglycemia. This is an emergency condition and should be treated promptly with oral sweets or injectable 25% glucose. Symptoms of hypoglycemic condition are profuse sweating, palpitations, tremers, even coma.
I have hypoglycemia but I am not diabetic and not on any drugs. I just have always had low blood sugar. My mother and sister are diabetic, but I am not.
Hypoglycemia is a tough condition. Sometimes I wake up with very low sugar (depending on what I ate the night before,) or sometimes I have no symptoms until I miss a meal (or go more than 4 hours without a snack.)
The symptoms I experience are: I start shaking really bad and get very clumsy, get extremely dizzy, start sweating ridiculously (like soaking my shirt!,) have blurry vision, get confused and talk much slower with slurred speech. My symptoms usually kick in around 68mg... most people feel the symptoms at a lower glucose level, but for me that number is where I average if I check as soon as the symptoms start showing.
Usually a quick drink of O.J. until I can get some food will help. I used to carry glucose tablets around with me (they're yummy!) but I ran out and never refilled.
With my pregnancy, I assumed I'd have gestational diabetes, but so far it's negative. But... my sugar has been falling pretty low lately..I think baby's using up all of my energy stores. :-)

Hello Tiffany, it is not necessary that a person who has diabetes or on insulin will have hypoglycemia. Any person can have that .I have given most important and common cause of hypoglycemia in my last message. Other causes are Insulinoma(Pancreatic tumor) Pancreatitis, autoimmune insulin syndrome, alcohol intake, Liver, kidney and heart diseases, pituitary insufficiency, hypothyroidism. I think you have answered your question yourself. You are saying you are pragnent. Yes, your baby is most probably the cause of your hypoglycemia as pragnency is also one cause of hypoglycemia. Good Luck.
