Hi I have PCOS and insulin resistance and from what I've been reading, a low carb diet might really help me lose weight and reduce my symptoms. Problem is, I'm a vegetarian (I don't eat meat or fish, but I'm OK with dairy products and eggs) and the low carb diet seems to be based largely on meat and I'm worried that I wouldn't get enough protein if I go on a low carb diet. Are there any other veggie low carbers out there?? Carbs like pasta and rice are a major part of what I eat now and I don't know what I could replace them with if I try to cut out carbs!! Any advice would be much appreciated...

Dr. Atkins says in his book that the Induction Phase (the 1st two weeks) just aren't doable as a vegetarian.
However, I also have insulin resistance and there's still a lot you can do as a vegetarian. First, cheese and eggs could compensate for a lot.
PLUS, there's low-carb protein shake supplements at the health food store made from soy protein.
Atkins has a line of cereals made from soy protein and just 3 net carbs. I mixed them in with some yogurt (which is supposed to have only 2 net carbs per half cup due to the lactose being turned into lactic acid by the bacteria). It was very good and filling and didn't cause cravings.
Nuts are low-carb too (just count the carbs!) and high protein.
Tofu could be used too I think. The soy hot dogs and burgers are fairly low-carb and high protein.
With the problem of insulin resistance, what's recommended is to combine protein with any carbs to slow down digestion.

Starr: if you are going to do the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet (from my understanding, the way of eating developed by Dr. Richard and Dr. Rachel Heller) you will find info for vegetarians, including recipes in their books. A former list I was on for a while had at least one person who found success with the CA way of eating. This is my first post to this group, Hello everyone!
