I need some suggestions on adding fiber in a low carb eating plan without adding carbs. As soon as I went to a low carb eating plan my colon shut down. Help!

That's not good. Are you drinking enough water in a day? That seems to make a difference for me. I try to get in at least 96 oz. a day and most days even more than that.
Also, are you taking magnesium? That definitely helps most people. But be careful with the magnesium...too much and you will have the opposite problem.
Good luck.

It is so amazing how different our bodies can be! My colon shuts down when I start eating carbs. In fact, I've been basically bed-ridden with horrific pain and spasms for the past 2 weeks. My ulcerative colitis flared up and I have a feeling it's cause I stopped low-carbing again (and stress, of course.) It seems I am completely REGULAR when I don't eat starches and pastas. As soon as I go on Atkins my colon loosens up! Go figure.
I agree with Cat, water consumption may have a lot to do with it.
There's a new product available in grocery stores now called BENEFIBER and it's basically a pwoder that dissolves completely and has absolutely no taste or texture. You can sprinkle it on all of your meals and snacks, even into liquids like water. Here's the nutritional info:
That's it. It's easy, has no taste and helps keep you moving along.
It comes in a green container shaped like the powdered CoffeeMate container. I bought it in the pharmacy, but I know all grocery stores carry it.. would imagine it's with the metamucil and stuff.

Johnetta, I had the same problem. When my doc first told me to lower my carbs, he didn't give me a very specific plan. I cut out just about ALL carbs except those from fruits. Though it was basically a good idea, I think the shock was too much for my body! One day, a loaf of bread and 2 baked potatoes - Next day, an apple and a cracker! (LOL) I called my doctor when it had been ONE WEEK since I'd had a BM, and I was told to get some magnesium-based laxative, which I did. It worked eventually. After that initial BM, things started flowing more smoothly (LOL). This is probably the weirdest post I've ever made.. AND IT'S MY FIRST POST HERE! HELLO EVERYONE!

Benefiber works well for me, but I also take stool softeners in the mornings. I drink the Benefiber in my morning cup of hot coffee and can't even notice it's there! It dissolves completely in the hot liquid, which I liked better than adding it to Diet V-8 Splash, because sometimes it would gel in the glass of cold liquid just a bit. Good Luck!

My first post also...this happened to me too. I started to drink as much water as possible and now I am finally "normal", not as "normal" as I used to be..but I just figured this was the way my body was going to deal with low carb eating.

Hey, I just found this site. This is so great! I already posted one message, but then I ran across this one about fiber and low carb dieting. Let me tell you what happened to me. I lost 37 pounds on Lo Carb, which I loved, but I couldn’t get the essential veggies I knew my body needed because so many of them were high in carbs. Then I came across this product that’s crammed full of veggies, and now I can get what I need daily to stay healthy and I don’t have to worry about adding carbs to my diet or gaining my 37 pounds back again. But, another added benefit is that I don’t have to take any icky tasting store bought fiber to stay “regular.” And the product has ZERO carbs. Yeh!

However, this is one thing that I do besides Metamucil 1-2 times a day.
I take a large glass of crushed ice, 2 scoops of Citrucil, and some no-cal pink lemonade powder, along with a spoon of Glutamine (helps with carb cravings). Put it all in the blender with 2 cups of water and it's the best pink-orange smoothie!

you guys should be really careful on doing these things...it could be dangerous for you, before attempting any of these type of diet, it is always wise to consult a doctor...for me, lots and lots of exercise still works.
