I've become quite a slug, and could use some motivation. I have decided to walk at a quick pace on the treadmill for an hour (app. 3 1/2 miles) to get my metabolism revved up again... I have lost 25 pounds on the South Beach Diet but have been stalled for over a month because I got lazy with my exercise. What are the rest of you doing?

Hi, smartcarber2003--I think the best exercise is the one you'll stick with. For me (a blackbelt level shopper) I aim for 30-45 min. of walking every day--favorite venue: one of three local malls. The scenery (people watching) is always different, the weather's always perfect (so no excuses!) and the terrain varies between the malls--one offers more distance (almonst 3 miles), and the other two have more incline/stairs/ramps to vary the difficulty. I stop on my way home; it's my de-stress prescription for after work.
Then, every other day, I do Pilates machine work--20 minutes either upper or lower body. For variety on that front, I also alternate in mat work and 10 minutes on a stair machine. Definitely stay moving--it's a big key to sustaining success.

WALKING WALKING WALKING. It's very little stress on the body, relieves a huge amount of mental stress, and it's something you can do without even realizing you've done much.
Gaelen.... Isn't it a bit tough to keep a good pace at the mall these days? I can't go there... so stressful... annoying Christmas shoppers taking their time... I would be too slowed down.
I go to the local gym and walk the treadmill. I was lazy after my surgery and didn't go for 3 months. Just started last week again. Feels great to be moving again!!! And since I just started my lifestyle again (yes, surgery really messed up my willpower,) it has helped me shed weight QUICKLY!
I stay away from everything else. I really like the treadmill. And our gym has music built in...you plug in headphones and can either tune in to the tv's across the way, or a variety of music channels. I put it on the dance tracks and walk to the fast beats. I close my eyes and imagine I'm walking down the street on an autumn day.

Tiff, most time points *are* pretty crowded at the mall--I'm lucky that: 1) all of the malls have 'mall walkers' circuits'--basically the long way around everything. They're kind of like mass transit lanes on the highway--you can keep moving at a pretty good clip, evne at crowded times. 2) all three of the local malls are open early/late ONLY for mall walkers. I pretty much never use the early times, but since I get out of work pretty late, I use the after hours entrance a LOT. The stores are closed, but the movie theatres and restaurants are open until midnight or later, so the inner walking paths are open for us "late cruisers." Since there's 8" of snow on the ground and more falling, and it's about 20 degrees outside, I'll take my chances dodging strollers and shoppers. Keeps me alert

My favorite exercise once I get in the groove is: Spinning, Pilates and Weights but I am such a social bug I really need fun and talkative people in the classes to motivate and encourage me or I have to recruit a buddy to join me and be committed......
What I do now that I have no club and live in the country w/o anyone close to grab?! My bestfriend who lives in NYC and concerned because I have gained so much over the years bought me a REBOUNDER for my 40th last May! It is one of the very best things if I can just make sure I do it....EVERY DAY....you can run or jump all while watching tv.
I also have bands, a Pilates ball and some weights but I have no idea what to do with them...kinda like trying to figure out how to use chop stix but I am sure one day I'll figure it out! Any suggestions? Please email me!

I found that an elliptical is great was to really get moving. It’s low impact and after two weeks I am up to 40 minutes and using the built in programs. I perform variety of dumbbell exercises to try and get my upper body back in shape as well. I think the key to any exercise program or regimen is to stretch and warm-up your body before performing and strenuous exercise. Also, when you’ve completed your daily routine, stretch again and keep moving, slowly cool down for a few minutes so the muscles do not tense up. I’ve been doing this for the past few weeks and I have never had soreness in my muscles. One other really nice thing about having a piece of workout equipment in your home is you can exercise anytime you want and in any type of clothing for that matter ;-).

I use Tony Little Gazzelle Edge for 30 min. a day and use my Ab Rocker for 10 min. It might not help alot but it's better than just sitting on my butt like I use to. Two weeks and counting, that's longer than I have stuck with any other exercise.
As the person above stated, the only good exercise is one you stick to and I hope I can stick to this.
Wish me luck!!

I have a manual treadmill and a hydraulic step machine. Both are lightweight so most times I put them right in front of the TV. If I can do one or the other while watching an entire sitcom then I know I got both a good workout and a good laugh.

I used to walk 5 days a week, power walk 2.2 miles which really paid off in as little as 4 wks, all outside walking with a friend who had MUCH longer legs than me lol. We moved and I then began ATkins and then started Curves, I really like Curves, but the hours were not suitable for me, but having had entered into a contract, I went religiously for 5 month back in 2003. It paid off, I lost 24 inches and have maintained that thus far. When my contract expired, I decided to save the money and the time and just start walking outside again, I did so, got myself up to power walking 5 miles 5 days a week and felt wonderful. Florida humidity and sun set in, and I became pregnant and now invest 2 miles 5 days a week on WATP. I am due here in a few weeks and still do it. I will begin the 3 mile WATP soon as I recover from my csection.

Exercise is often over looked in the LC lifestyle but it is so important. I encourage all of you to think of something new to do this season. I walk, do videos, weights, the gym, bike inside and out. Now hubby and I go skating once a week and we love it! Try something new! Suz
