why is it that my professional athlete sons and myself, a former marathon runner, register as obese for our body weight and height?

We are all hard muscled and tall weighing between 215 and 240. We appear to be tall and in my sons' cases lanky. does anyone know how or if the bmi is adjusted to account for athletically muscled bodies? no they do not use steroids....

It's probably because muscle weighs a great deal more than fat does. It throws off calculations, especially in cases such as you describe.
